     Episode 2: Grounded

They took off just after Nissa waved them off, climbing fast over the tree line while the sky still held that late-gold color. Blitzen set the pace out front, and for a while it was almost easy — wind at their backs, the paddock shrinking below into a smudge of red and green.

"This is nice," Vixen called out, coasting on a current. "Why don't we do this every day?"

"Because every day you'd find a way to complain about it," Comet shot back.

Blaze said nothing. He kept his head level, eyes forward, trying not to think about how his nose sat cold and dark against his own face while the wind rushed past it. A working nose would've told him something about the air right about now. This one told him nothing at all.

They were maybe an hour out, the frozen river just starting to show as a silver thread far below, when Blitzen's ears went flat against his head.

    "Behind us," he said.

Nobody needed to ask what he meant. The sky at their backs had gone the color of a bruise, low and fast-moving, swallowing the gold light whole as it came. It hadn't been there ten minutes ago — Blitzen would've sworn to it — and now it was closing the distance like it had somewhere urgent to be.

"That's not supposed to happen this fast," Juniper said, voice climbing.

"Down!" Blitzen was already banking, dropping altitude hard. "Now — we can't outrun that, and we can't fly blind in it either!"

The storm caught them before they'd even leveled off. It came in low and mean, snow driving sideways instead of down, thick enough that Comet — flying wingtip to wingtip with Blitzen — lost sight of him for a full three seconds before the wind shoved them back together. The river below vanished. The trees vanished. There was only white, and cold, and the roar of wind trying to peel them out of the sky.

"LAND!" Blitzen bellowed over it. "Anywhere flat — just get DOWN!"

They came down hard and ungraceful, one after another, hooves punching through snow that hadn't been there an hour ago and was already ankle-deep and climbing. Blaze stumbled on landing, his back leg sinking wrong into a drift, and Juniper crashed into him trying to avoid the same hole.

"Everyone here?" Blitzen shouted, turning in a slow circle, snow already caking thick along his back.

    "Here!" "Here!" "Here—cold, but here!"

Blaze pulled his leg free and forced himself upright, snow already collecting in the grooves of his antlers. Flying was out. Anyone could see that now — the sky was a wall of white in every direction, and going back up into it would mean flying blind into who-knew-what.

"We walk," Blitzen said, already turning his back to the wind and starting to move, using his own body to break a path the others could follow. "River's still that way, near as I can tell. We stay together, we stay moving, and nobody — nobody — wanders off to look at something interesting. Understood?"

"Understood," they answered, one after another, and fell into line behind him — four sets of hooves punching through snow that hadn't existed twenty minutes ago, heads down, walking into weather that had come out of nowhere and clearly wasn't finished yet.

The storm didn't so much stop as give up. One minute the wind was still clawing at them sideways, and the next it was just... thinning, the white curtain pulling back in patches until they could see more than three feet in front of their own noses. Snow kept falling, but softer now, drifting instead of driving.

"Finally," Juniper muttered, shaking a small avalanche off her back.
